1. Why Nova Scotia?
Nova Scotia is a province of Canada lying just to the North East of New England. Its International Airport provides direct air access to the UK in around 5.5 hours. Culturally, the province's roots are heavily influenced from Britain. Friendly people, a rich and diverse lifestyle and many opportunities for work, investment and leisure can provide a fantastic back drop to your new life. Property prices are far cheaper than the UK enabling many families to buy their dream home. The Capital, Halifax, is a thriving port city of around 380,000 people; popular with tourists, this historical city is the vibrant hub of Nova Scotia. Halifax is also home to Five universities and world class medical centres as well as more bars and cafes per head of population than anywhere else in North America.

2. Isn't Nova Scotia one of the coldest places in Canada?
Infact Nova Scotia is the warmest Canadian Province overall. The weather is seasonal but very similar to the UK for most of the year.

3. Do I need a visa to Visit?
If you are a British Citizen, you do not need a visa to visit Canada.

4. Can I just live and work in Nova Scotia without a visa?
You can visit for up to six months and apply for an extension whilst here but you will need a work permit or Resident status to work.

5. How do I get a visa and Permanent Resident status?
You can obtain full residency through a number of different routes. Applications and details can be found at: Citizenship and Immigration Canada. If you get a validated job offer, a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) can be issued, this in turn enables the prospective employee to apply for a Temporary Work Permit (either from CHC or directly at a Canadian Port of Entry). Recent changes to immigration policy means that applicants who have applied on or after 27th February 2008 and have at least one year’s experience of certain skills can look at timelines for Full Residency Visas in around 6-8 months. All applicants are still subject to CIC points criteria, medicals and police checks. Applicants without the skills and experience laid down by CIC will be rejected unless they have a validated job offer or offer of employment (or are either studying or living legally as a temporary foreign worker in Canada). A list of skills and experience required for a skilled worker application can be found on the CIC website.

6. Can I fast track my emigration process?
A popular way to expedite your emigration process is to become nominated by your chosen province. The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) have different application routes, if nominated your process is fast tracked and normal timelines would be more in the region of a year to obtain your Permanent Residency. You can still apply for nomination even if you have already submitted your full application previously with CIC. To apply under the skilled worker class a job offer is required.

7. Which jobs will not qualify under the NSNP Skilled worker class?
Jobs which will not qualify include Part time, seasonal, commission based or low skill based positions.

8. Can I own a property without being a Canadian Resident?
Yes. Residency is not a prerequisite of owning property in Nova Scotia.

9. Do I need to employ an immigration consultant?
Around 40% of applicants for residency to Canada will use the services of an immigration consultant. Although not required, a good immigration company can smooth your application process, especially if you require work visas or plan to apply through the NSNP.
