Leisure

Living in Nova Scotia will present you with a wide spectrum of leisure activities from which to choose. The more defined seasons in the province will of course have a great bearing on which activities are foremost during the year.

Sports

Generally speaking, sports will be based more on the US model, with Ice Hockey, Baseball, American football as staples. Other major sports include Ice skating, rowing/canoeing, golf, fishing, sailing, and Soccer. Other sports are also available.

Hiking, walking and camping are also popular with great Provincial parks and long stretches of coastline to choose from.

There is a wide variety of gyms available but these tend not to include swimming pools. In summer, swimming is usually based around the lake culture but access to good quality pools at hotel facilities or large community sport and leisure complexes such as Cole harbour Place and Sackville Stadium.

Winter sports include skiing at some specialised facilities such as Wentworth and Martock. Ice Hockey however is by far the National obsession and many children will play at an early age. The Halifax Mooseheads based at the Metro centre are very popular and well worth seeing on a scouting trip.

Nova Scotia has a very good variety of superb golf courses; these are usually open from May to October but can extend seasons depending on the weather.

Music/ clubs / bars

The main concert and function facility in Halifax is the Metro centre which plays host to not only sporting events but concerts by world class music acts in all genres.

Halifax in particular is a city full of music/ theatre/ arts with a vibrant bar and club culture. There are more bars per head of population than anywhere in North America. Halifax also boasts a very good quality theatre culture based around the Neptune Theatre.

Halifax is also home to Casino Nova Scotia.

Children's activities

Children's recreation tends to be based around local facilities in non school times, with a huge volunteer based culture facilitating activities. Booking early is advisable. Access to booking facilities is normally available online from provincial or municipal websites such as the Halifax rec connect website. Scouts, sports and private clubs abound for children, as well as after school activities in all manner of leisure pursuits.

Libraries and museums

Nova Scotia has a very good infrastructure of libraries with free access to books.

Museums and Historic sites

Whilst on a scouting trip you may like to experience some of the history and culture of the province at a range of Museums and historic sites.
